July 9, 2016
Edward Bell Jr. passed away unexpectedly while on vacation on July 9, 2016. He was enjoying some of his favorite things. He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Gretchen McThenia Collins, and her husband, Brad; Brooke Bell Pettyjohn, and her husband, Clunet; and Edward Bell III and his wife, Rachel. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren: Whitley and Emma McThenia; McKenna, Clu and Mary Macon Pettyjohn; and Charles, Jackson, Sam and Anne Catherine Bell. In addition, he leaves behind his companion, Frances Keiling. Also surviving are his sister, Linda Colonna and her husband Nate. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Robert King Bell.
Ed was bo August 6, 1939 to Dorothy Gerrish Bell and Edward Bell in Dubois, PA. He was the oldest of three children. He was gifted academically and after winning a National Merit Scholarship, entered Washington and Lee University at age 16. After graduating from W & L early, he chose to attend Washington and Lee Law School, finishing that program early as well. Ed accepted a position with IBM and worked there for several years before beginning his more than 25 year career with The Lane Company of Altavista, Virginia. Ed "retired" to Fort Myers, Florida. However, retirement was not really in his vocabulary, and he began a successful financial planning company, Coerstone Financial, in Fort Myers, FL.
Ed loved to travel, and shared his wanderlust with his children and friends. He enjoyed playing racquetball and waterskiing in his younger years and found golf to be more his speed as he matured. He loved being on the water with the sun on his face, and was happiest either listening to Fox News while watching the stock ticker at his home in Florida, reading a good book, boating with friends and family, or spending time with his children, grandchildren, and friends. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held in Fort Myers, FL in the fall.
